The Daily Life of Gay Parents Shows the Photos You Wish You Had Seen Sooner
A few months ago, photographer Annemarie Dekker contacted me to see if I wanted to tell you about her new book about gay family life. I have been super busy with covering ClexaCon and Love Fan Fest, but I am so happy that I can finally tell you all about this new book. In fact, I recorded my first unboxing video about it! Below, you can read why The Daily Life of Gay Parents makes me very happy and where you can get your copy.
For a Dutch version of this blog, please visit ‘The Daily Life of Gay Parents laat je de foto’s zien die je al veel eerder had willen zien.’
The Daily Life of Gay Parents is personal to Annemarie Dekker
As she describes on her website, Annemarie Dekker asked herself what daily life is like for families with homosexual parents when her girlfriend was pregnant with their first child. So, for three years, she photographed over fifty families in all shapes and sizes: two moms, two dads, single parents, and multi-parent families. We can now watch her beautiful photos in a hardcover book.
Why The Daily Life of Gay Parents makes me happy
The best way to see what impact her book has on me is watching my unboxing video below. What I can tell you, though, is that it gave me great pleasure seeing my family life represented in a book.
The accompanying interviews, which are available in both Dutch and English, also offer me a learning experience. I started Meemoeder.com to share my experiences when my wife and I were trying to have a baby. I was looking for other people’s experience, but all I could find were webpages from the Government and lawyers. For over two years, to give back to my community, I shared everything. Our son is now three years old, and elementary school is the next step. I hope to find a few answers in the interviews regarding how older kids and parents react to same-sex families, and learn from their experiences.
Where can you get your copy?
The book is hardcover, has 128 pages, and is 30.5 x 21.5 cm landscape format. You can order the book on Annemarie’s website. The costs are €24.95 (NL), $28 (USA), or £21 (UK) plus shipping costs.
